Summary

AR technology isn’t helping just human patients.
Vet CT, a veterinary technology (“VetTech”) based out of Cambridge, United Kingdom, has partnered with the Pennard Vet Clinic on a trial program demonstrating the practical use-cases of AR technology in the veterinary office. The story was first reported by Business Weekly earlier this week.
Using a pair of Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2 smart glasses, a clinical team of Pennard vets working out of Sevenoaks was able to broadcast audio and video to a group of Vet CT specialists tuning in remotely from Kent, London. Specialists could record images and video and provide valuable feedback to the wearer in real-time. The wearer could also communicate back to specialists using the device’s built-in speakers and microphone.
“We have a tremendous resource of specialist knowledge and expertise within our global team and are constantly exploring new ways to provide support to veterinary teams,” said Julien Labruyère, Vet CT director and Innovation Lead. “This first step we have taken with Google Glass marks the start of an exciting journey to make smart glasses technology useful to help vets in local practices.”
“We believe the future of veterinary care is through improving the support we can provide to clinical teams wherever they may be located. Although there are some limitations with the current technology it presents an exciting opportunity for our teleconsulting service. The next stages of development will take us to new levels of patient care for pets.”
AR technology has proven to be a powerful tool in the hands of medical professionals. Google Glass offers vets a way to communicate with specialists while keeping their hands free to operate. The technology can also be used to project relevant information over the real world for the wearer to reference. As AR technology continues to advance, you can expect to see more of this technology make its way to doctor’s offices and waiting rooms across the globe.
