Since the launch of the social VR platform Bigscreen, movie fans have been jumping into VR to checkout a huge catalog of awesome 2D and 3D blockbuster flicks alongside friends and strangers from across the globe.

The movie genres span from sci-fi, drama, action, comedy, to films that reflect our current political landscape, offering a little something for everyone. However, there was one thing missing from the platform that users have been begging for: a dedicated built-in video player. 

As a matter of fact, it was one of the most requested features. 

Well it’s time to give your vocal chords a break, because the bigwigs at Bigscreen have heard your demands and they are officially launching a new feature that will let you play your videos in a private room, and you can invite your friends to watch it with you.

Since the inception of Bigscreen, the platform has rapidly evolved, building new partnerships that have allowed them to screen everything from big Hollywood films from studios such as Paramount, to live events and professional sports.

Adding a dedicated video player opens up even more possibilities for the budding social VR platform. Being able to show your personal files without the need of a tethered PC could transform Bigscreen from an entertainment platform into a private classroom or even a tool for remote workforce training. Now even Quest users can share their videos by sideloading content onto their headsets, opening new doors for standalone VR.

Imagine showing a pre-recorded science lesson to a class of students tuning in remotely from across the globe, or showcasing your companies latest product via a custom video presentation while waiting for your flight. Because Bigscreen is a social VR platform, you’re able to talk during the video to add additional information, or even stop the video to engage with the classroom.

One thing to keep in mind is that showing your video in Bigscreen won’t be as easy as selecting a file from the menu; there is a bit of setup involved. In order for others to view the video alongside you in real-time, they’ll need to have the same file loaded onto their headsets as well. So long as you and your friends (or colleagues) all have the same file, the video will be synced to the same position; if you stop the video, it stops for everyone.

This is a much needed and much requested update for Bigscreen. Fans of the platform already know how much fun a Bigscreen VR experience can be. You are able to interact with people, play games, and throw objects like popcorn and tomatoes at the screen. All of those features will be part of the video player, which could be a really fun way to sit through a presentation. Imagine throwing a tomato at your boss or your teacher!
