Summary

Put simply, Pistol Whip 2089 is an over-the-top dystopian joyride unlike anything available on VR headsets.
Today marks the launch of Pistol Whip’s first-ever cinematic campaign, “2089.” Available on SteamVR and Oculus headsets as a free update to existing owners, 2089 places you in the role John Asimov, who—after tracking a destress beacon to an off-world colony—finds himself alone and surrounded by a never-ending wave of killer machines.
Upon first hearing the news regarding 2089, I questioned whether or not a game like Pistol Whip even needed a narrative update. After spending the last hour barreling through the entirety of the campaign, however, I’d be willing to argue that 2089 is Pistol Whip’s best update so far.
The campaign is broken up into five scenes, each featuring their own unique challenges and modifiers designed to change up the gameplay as you battle your way to the heart of the robot menace in search of answers. For example, shortly after beginning your journey you find yourself trapped behind enemy territory without any ammunition. The only way to escape with your life is to “pistol whip” your way through a gauntlet of metal monstrosities.
In between each scene you’re treated to a short cinematic detailing your heroes adventure. These immersive cutscenes are brought to life via incredible art by comic artist and creator Fico Ossio, who’s resume includes G.I.JOE, Transformers, TMNT, and Spider-Man.
In addition to these new scenes and cinematics, 2089 introduces a brand new synth-wave soundtrack featuring music by Black Tiger Sex Machine, Draeden, Processor, and an exclusive remix by Magic Sword.
Whether it be the neon-fueled environments or adrenaline-pumping music, 2089 marks yet another incredible update for Cloudhead Games’ addicting rhythm shooter. Put simply, Pistol Whip 2089 is an over-the-top dystopian joyride unlike anything available on VR headsets at the moment.
Pistol Whip 2089 is available now as a free update for existing owners on SteamVR, Oculus Rift/Rift S, and Oculus Quest/Quest 2. Cloudhead Games is already teasing their next update, “Concierge”, which is scheduled to arrive Spring 2021.
