Summary

Hunt monsters, embark on quests, and collect trophies in this location-based AR game coming later this month.
It seems you can’t turn a corner these days without bumping into the wildly popular fantasy drama franchise The Witcher. Whether it be the original novel series, the award-winning video game trilogy, or the ongoing Netflix TV adaptation, Geralt and his trusty steed Roach don’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon.
As if that weren’t enough to keep fans of the ultra-violent dark fantasy world satisfied, this past August we learned that the series would be receiving its own mobile game for iOS & Android devices similar to location-based AR experiences such as Pokémon GO and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.
Set well before the events of Geralt of Rivia, The Witcher: Monster Slayer has you taking on the role of an amateur witcher and working your way up to an elite monster hunter by completing a variety of story-driven quests that will take you across a version of the Continent still infested by dangerous creatures.

Similar to existing location-based AR games, you’ll physically travel throughout the real world in order to complete quests and discover new monsters. While information about the gameplay is light at the moment, expect to be fighting off dozens of grotesque creatures and embarking on a variety of missions.
Everything from the time of day to the weather can determine what type of beast you’ll come across. As you continue to slay monsters you’ll unlock trophies and earn additional XP, further cementing your legend across the land. Based on the footage provided, developer Spokko didn’t skimp on the details; these are some truly horrific-looking monsters…
Much like the RPG series, you’ll need to learn the habits of each monster you face and customize your weapon and armor appropriately. You can also brew magical potions which can be used to assist you in battle.
The Witcher: Monster Slayer will be available free on iOS & Android devices beginning July 21st. Those on Android can pre-register now to receive the Kaer Morhen Steel Sword and 10% more experience for every monster killed in-game. The Google Play Store listing states that the game will feature in-game purchases, though it’s unclear as to what that might entail.
