We’re inching ever closer to 3 Body Problem’s premiere on Netflix, and today, that means another glimpse at the sci-fi adaptation. Whereas the previous trailer focused on the incredibly immersive virtual reality game at the core of the story, the latest clip focuses on something different: the mystery. Basically, a whole bunch of scientists have gone missing, and Benedict Wong’s character is trying to figure out what it all means.

The show, of course, is based on the novel by Liu Cixin (which was just the first part of a trilogy), and Netflix describes the premise thusly:

The story begins in 1960s China when a young woman makes a fateful decision that reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature as we know them inexplicably unravel, a tight-knit group of brilliant scientists must join forces with an unflinching detective to stop humanity’s greatest threat.

It features an excellent cast — in addition to Wong, there’s Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Rosalind Chao, Liam Cunningham, Eiza González, Jess Hong, Marlo Kelly, Alex Sharp, Sea Shimooka, Zine Tseng, Saamer Usmani, and Jonathan Pryce — and is being helmed by showrunners Alexander Woo, David Benioff, and D.B. Weiss (the former duo being best known for another epic adaptation with Game of Thrones on HBO). In a post on Netflix’s Tudum site, Woo talked a bit about how the team is approaching shifting 3 Body Problem from book to television.

“What we are hoping to do is to convey the experience — if not necessarily the exact details — of the novel onto the screen,” he explained. “What stayed, we hope, is the sense of wonderment and the sense of scope, of scale, where the problems are no longer just the problems of an individual or even a nation, but of an entire species.”

The new trailer reveal was actually part of CES 2024 — which makes a certain kind of sense given 3 Body Problem’s sleek, futuristic VR headset. The show starts streaming on March 21st.
