Summary

In loose terms, DoF (Degrees of Freedom) in a 3D (Three-Dimensional) VR (Virtual Reality) world determines — where you can move around, where you can look around.

What is DoF (Degrees of Freedom) in VR?

DoF stands for degrees of freedom. This is a term for motion about an axis or along an axis. For example, your elbow joint in 1 DoF. All objects around you that can move in 3D space move in 6 ways, these 6 ways are 3 directional axes and 3 rotational axes. Each of these axes is a DoF. We live in a 3D world and interact it in all 6 DoF — mechatech.co.uk

Virtual Reality (VR) allows users to
Move:
  1. Surge — forward/backward (X-axis)
  2. Sway — Left/Right (Y-axis)
  3. Heave — Up/Down (Z-axis)
Change where you can look and Turn:
4. Roll — Longitudinal axis — (Tilting side to side on the X-axis)
5. Pitch — Lateral Axis (Tilting forward and backward on the Y-axis)
6. Yaw — Normal Axis (Turning left and right on the Z-axis)
In terms of a headset, such as the kind used for virtual reality, rotational envelopes can also be thought of in the following terms:
Roll: Bobbling from side to side
Pitch: Nodding “yes”
 — Yaw: Shaking “no”
