Just in case you didn’t know, augmented reality (AR) is not only limited to Instagram but Facebook as well. I wouldn’t blame you for not knowing as the Facebook AR land has long been forgotten in most part of the world, mainly because it has limited discoverability and a significantly lesser amount of people creating the 24 hours stories compared to Instagram. While there are benefits to Instagram filter marketing, you might still want to consider creating Facebook AR filter if you are a brand because of Facebook AR Ads. In this article, I am going to show how you can easily create a Facebook AR Ads in 8 steps!

Step 1: Create & Publish An Facebook AR Ad filter on Spark AR Hub

Just like how a filter is normally created, you can create an AR filter (or engage AR filter developer like us!) using Spark AR studio and publish your effect in Spark AR Hub. The key difference for uploading a Facebook AR Ad effect is that you would need to choose “Facebook Ads” instead of “Facebook” as the platform to upload your filter to while publishing.
Once you chose “Facebook Ads” as the platform, you can upload your export file and fill in the rest of the information as per normal. The information you are required to provide for loading on Facebook AR Ads are:
  • Effect export file
  • Name of effect
  • Owner of the effect
  • Instruction for the reviewer
  • Demo video of filter
As you can see, the uploading process is slightly easier than uploading on Instagram because it requires lesser information to be provided. Once the filter is uploaded, you would need to wait for up to 10 working days (usually lesser) for Facebook to approve the filter before you can proceed with the next step.

Step 2: Create A Facebook Ad campaign on Facebook Ads Manager

Next, you can create a Facebook Ad campaign through Facebook Ads Manager just like how you would normally create an Ad on Facebook.
You would then need to choose your marketing objectives from the options provided by Facebook.
NOTE that the following marketing objectives are not compatible with Facebook AR Ads:
  • Engagement
  • App Installs
  • Video Views
  • Lead Generation
  • Messages
  • Catalogue Sales

Step 3: Choose Your Audience & Budget

Choose your audiences & budget as per any normal Facebook ad campaign.

Step 4: Setup the Facebook AR Ads

This step is the most important step as it is where you set up the Facebook AR Ads using the AR Filter that was previously approved on Spark AR Hub. Check the box beside “Add an Instant Experience” when you are at this page.
Checking the box will open up the 3 options for instant experience, with one of it being “AR Experience”, which is highlighted in the red box in the screenshot above. Select “Use template” which will lead to you the next step.

Step 5: Add An AR Experience

A new window will launch for you to choose the AR effect to be used for the Facebook Ad. You will be able to find all your approved Facebook Ad filters under the dropdown option in “Effect”, choose the filter which you wish to use for your campaign. Next, choose the default camera which you want the effect to be launched when your audiences use it. Finally, you may add a Call To Action button which can lead your audiences to any external website that is linked to your campaign. The Call To Action button will appear within the filter when it is launched as shown below.
When you are done with the setup, you can also choose to preview your AR Ads on your mobile by choosing the option on the bottom right-hand corner. Once everything is ready, you can click done.
Make sure your filter appears in the red box above.

Step 6: Add Video For Your Facebook AR Ads

Next, you will need to add the video which your audience will see when your Facebook AR ads appear on their feed. I would recommend using the demo video so your audience will know how your filter works, but you can also add other messages you want to include for your campaign. Click on the “Add Video” in the Media section.
Select or upload the video of your choice and click continue.

Step 7: Edit The Primary Text For Your Facebook AR Ads

Type in the text you want your audience to see in your Facebook AR Ads post. You can also choose the 2 text overlay options which will prompt your audience to use the filters when they see your ads.
  1. Tap to try it on
  2. Tap to see it in your space
  3. Tap to interact
You will be able to see the ads preview on the right. Do note that Facebook AR Ads can only be seen on the mobile news feed as only smartphones have the capability to open up the Facebook AR filter.

Step 8: Finish Up Your Facebook AR Ads & Review It

All the steps which involve the Facebook AR filter have now been completed. All you need to do now is to finalise the rest of your ads setting as per a normal Facebook Ads and publish it!
Once your ad is approved, your audience will be able to see your ads with the prompt for your users to launch the AR filter with just a single tap on their screen. This fully integrated function on Facebook makes the launch of AR filter a lot easier for your audience, and at the same time, allows you to leads your audiences to an external website to complete the shopping experience (for example) after experiencing your AR filter. You may also track the numbers as per a normal Facebook ad and calculate the ROI of the filter in terms of sales. These are all functions that are only available on Facebook and not Instagram, which is why there are still benefits for brands to use Facebook AR filter for Facebook AR Ads.
