Bang! Bang! Pull Your RevolVRs: LBE Game Development

At JetStyle we believe that VR gaming has got incredible potential for growth, as headsets are becoming more affordable for the general public.
RevolVR 3 is a multiplayer VR shooter designed for 6DOF headsets. Staged in a robotic version of the Wild West world, it provides many social activities for player interaction. We developed this game with Dima Productions for Never Bored, an Estonia-based publisher.
The previous installments of the franchise — RevolVR and RevolVR 2 — have been available exclusively for LBE, as a part of the PlayVR platform. The second edition is present at 78 arcades around the world. In two years since its release, it had attracted more than three million plays. It has been a top-3 title of 60+ available at all locations. Two RevolVR tournaments have been held attracting hundreds of thousands viewers.

CHALLENGE

Our task was to adapt the game for home VR headsets, thus making it more popular and available for players.

HERE IS WHAT WE DID

1. Invented a new world and its lore
On a dusty planet with sand-blasting winds, gun-making tycoons rent robot bodies to adventurous humans with hotshot ambitions in return for trying out their newly designed revolver handguns. Gunslingers of all sorts load into robotic bodies to take part in grand Frontier-like stand-offs and show off their skills and shooting styles.
2. A new character
There are four robots and four revolver models. The player can pick anyone. Some of them remained the same from the previous games — Voodoo, Sheriff and Agent. But we also added a new one; her name is Wuxia.
Wuxia has come out of a Bruce Lee’s film, and she shows that. In battle, she knows how to be secretive, but in good company, it is hard not to notice her. The Wuxia revolver is unusual: it puts the enemy to rest with a shuriken in their forehead. She can be soft, but she can be destructive too.
3. A new non-combat location
We took care of the players so that they don’t feel uncomfortable on the surface of this planet. After the brawl, they can relax in the saloon. We remember the legends of the Wild West, and the players can dive right into them!
The saloon is the main menu of the game with random players online, about 30 per location. Inside the saloon, the players can safely move around, listen to music and chat. The main function of the saloon is communication: they can discuss the past battle and get ready for a new one, have fun and play mini-games.
4. New mini-games in the saloon
- Speed shooting at bottles
The saloon has an area where players can shoot bottles. The bottles are placed in a row at a distance behind the counter. The player can go up to this rack and start firing at them. There may be other players nearby, but the mini-game starts with whoever starts shooting first. Players can compete to check who’s the first to shoot all the bottles without a single miss. The results are visible on a scoreboard next to the shooting spot.
- Hit the drone
A drone flies into the saloon from time to time. It flies high above the ceiling and moves quickly. The challenge is to be the first to destroy it.
After the first hit, the drone begins to move quickly and chaotically, becoming a difficult target. The player either needs to shoot at it a lot or very accurately hit it in a weak spot.
When a player hits the drone, it explodes and the player who destroyed it receives coins.
- Russian roulette
That one needs no explanation.
At the moment, the game is designed for 2 to 8 people on the map. 3 rounds of 2.5 minutes for a total of 8 minutes per game.
The game is a battle royale type, focusing on everyone vs everyone deathmatch, but the players can also choose to cooperate team-vs-team or team-vs-bots. Bots can be added to any game and match players’ skills and gaming style.
The game can be public (with random players) and private (if you want to play with your friends).
RevolVR 3 encourages people to move more: jump, duck, hide behind covers and choose unusual angles to shoot from.
After death, players emerge in a random location. The winner is the one with the most points for regular hits. The better you shoot, the greater the reward you get.

TO MAKE IT ALL REAL, WE, AS DEVELOPERS

— did a lot of work on conceptual design and came up with the game world’s lore
— adapted the game for LBE so that it can be played in multiplayer home VR;
— expanded the LBE version of the game to meet the requirements of most of the world’s LBE networks;
— in addition, we created a new non-game location-lobby for social interaction of players, a system of bots, ranks, mini-games and much more that is required for a multiplayer game.

AS A RESULT

RevolVR 3 was released on SteamVR in February 2021.
By now, the game has achieved the following:
Top-3 title in 100+ parks around the world
3+ mln players over the 3 years in the market
30% of players come back and bring their friends

VR provides extraordinary immersive experiences, and it would be wasteful not to use it for increasing business profits. Even if a whole game looks too much, there are a myriad of separate VR gaming activities that can fit perfectly into a company’s marketing strategy.
