A few easy entry points to becoming a VR Creator
- Check out the Software:
- Game Engines (Coding): Unity, Unreal Engine 4
- 3D Modeling (The Art): Blender, Maya,
- These are just for starters, but the list is endless.
For ease of time, we’ll focus on Unity and the Coding aspect of VR, with sections to come on 3D modeling/rigging later.
2. Unity Setup for VR:
- Oculus Integration — imports the Oculus Avatar, hand tracking, and basic hand functionalities like grab, throw, etc.
- Open VR (SteamVR Only)
- Android’s SDK (Oculus Quest only)— for this you’ll want to download Android 4.4 (SDK 19) and Android 7.1 (SDK 25)
- Oculus Home (Oculus Rift only) — this will play on your PC while testing
- In Unity, make sure you go to “Edit”>“Project Settings”>“XR Settings”> under “Virtual Reality SDKs” enable “Oculus” & “OpenVR”
Once you’re setup with those three tools, you’ll be good to start developing. Simple as that.
3. Developing:
- Access to Unity Documentation
^That’s the Bible of developing for Unity. Really if you played around with that Encyclopedia you’d have all you need to become a fully fledged Unity Developer
Trending AR VR Articles:

4. How XR Can Unleash Cognition
But to make things easier, here are some free and paid for tutorials on Unity Development (apply to both VR and standard PC games):
- Unity Learn — as a beginner you can learn almost everything you need in bite sized lessons [FREE]
- Udacity VR NanoDegree— course is being revamped with the release of products like the Oculus Quest, but will be available soon [Not Free]
- Lynda Learning — as with many other industry knowledge, this is a great resource and usually through your local library you can get a FREE subscription. Cover topics like Virtual Reality and Unity Development.
4. The Goal:
- Unity Certification — if you need a goal to motivate yourself, a direction for all your learning, the Unity Certification is proof of professionalism for game design developers. Test can be taken online (using eye-tracking) and here are the materials the test will cover.
