Summary
HTC announced today that the HTC Vive Pro will permanently lower its headset to £599.
The Vive Pro Starter Kit with the Vive Pro headset, with two Steam VR™ Base Stations 1.0, and two Vive controllers, will go down to £899.
The Vive Pro Full Kit with two Steam VR Base Stations 2.0 and two controllers will be £1119.
Analysis
Short news from the company today, but significant. After the Christmas rush where the Oculus Go sold like hot cakes on Amazon, and the Oculus Quest is out of stock, HTC wants to catch up.
Depending on the demand, lowering the price may bring people into the HTC ecosystem. And with the great value that VIVEPORT brings, it would be great to see whether some people will ramp it up.
Still, it is £200 more expansive than the Valve Index with 2.0 base stations and controllers, so competitors have a direct edge.
Meanwhile, the Vive Focus line of products is quiet, which makes me wonder whether something is happening in the background. But in any case, it is clear that HTC wants to move more stock. If people want to lean in towards the subscription model, then this provides decent value.
